Teschmacher about her own work: “My sculptures come to life with light. It is then that they surrender what they have held tightly in their enclosed spaces. The disclosing of this secret is one thing that I strive for in my work. It is important for me to be able to bring the viewer into an atmosphere of attention, astonishment, absorption, and calm.” And indeed, transparency is the prerequisite to press on, literally, to the core of her work. Teschmacher blows, cuts and polishes the glass to “depth-scopes”, objects that give her the illusion that inner beauty can literally be brought to light. One of the finest examples of this pursuit is the “Cradle of Life”, a transparent pendant above a small glass globe. Like a magic centre of the force field of changes. The deepest secret of life, symbolized by a golden nucleus in the pendant, is visible, inaccessible.

Winnie Teschmacher’s glass eggs, by contrast, have no nucleus, just their substance. And it was clear that everyone interpreted that substance in their own manner when Winnie asked a number of people to choose one of the eggs and hold it firmly. That provided a fascinating series of photos. The way that everyone held the egg spoke volumes about their personal experience. That touched the core of Winnie Teschmacher’s work: to touch the human soul with the simplest, purest forms.
