| “In my work light plays an all-determining role. The metaphysical meaning of ‘pure light’ really fascinates me. But I am also inspired by the perceived action of light and of contrasts in ‘light and darkness’ or ‘beauty and decay’. The stimulus to painting is a deep experience of my personal observation. This fascination brings me further to an almost instinctive artistic processing of the perceived object. Perhaps through some special (over) sensitivity?
A general human experience is amazement over light that appears again every morning from the darkness of the night. This early light can be a relief and have the meaning of a new life in which things appear “new.” Wonder over and fascination for this light of hope makes it the central feature in my work.
My nature still lifes have a light foreground and a dark background. With this abstracting from the surroundings, attention is focused on the interaction of light and shadow. The abstract surfaces in a painting have the same function as white paper for a poem. Thus a specific image-poetry develops. By connecting the subject matter only loosely to its natural surroundings, room is created for new meanings.”
